Puncture Repair
Punctures should be repaired as soon as possible, as continued use can render the tyre unsafe. If your tyre undergoes a temporary repair, it must be removed from service and taken in for a safe, permanent repair promptly.
Global guidelines require major tyre producers to determine whether a puncture is safe to repair, as incorrect repairs can be dangerous. Tyres must be removed from the rim for a full inspection before assessing and safely repairing a puncture.
For a safe repair, the only approved method is a mushroom plug applied from inside the tyre, which combines both a plug and patch:
- The inner liner of the tyre must be buffed and prepared.
- The puncture path is cleaned.
- The plug is fully inserted to fill the puncture path.
- The patch is cemented and coated to ensure air integrity.
- The tyre is re-fitted, inflated, and water tested.
- The wheel is balanced to account for redistributed weight after the repair.
How can I ensure my tyre repair is safe?
A compliant repair requires removing the tyre from the rim. A repair done in under 15 minutes or costing less than R120 is likely non-compliant. Trusted tyre dealers follow these safety protocols and will refuse to repair tyres that do not meet safety standards.
